"A day might come when Our writings reach our heirs, - God bless them all - As the light of dead stars reaches the earth" |
In Spring 1698, in the palace of the Grand Masters in Valletta, Boyar Boris Petrovich
Scheremetev received from the hands of Grand Master Perellos, a diamond studded gold
cross of the Order of St. John, emissary of Tsar Peter the Great. The ceremony was described
in letters and memoirs in great detail.
400 years later, a unique exhibition is being held, consisting of documents (including the report of Scheremetev's visit to Malta), books, paintings, photographs, all dedicated to Russo-Maltese historical connections. The exhibition presents a unique continuous record, extending over four centuries. Visitors will have a fascinating journey discovering the glorious past of the two nations, some amazing historical parallels, as well as stunning evidence of interchanges benefitting the two cultures. On view are highlights from Russian and Maltese archives, museums, private collections, lavishly illustrated books, rare original photographs, oil paintings and water colours. It offers perspectives on various connections between Malta and Russia through the centuries. The exhibition is divided into sections, covering XVI-XVII centuries, XVIII century, XIX century and XX century. |
